Can A Magical Symbol Grant Your Wish?

Dr. Quandry Sigils
Magic.  I love stories with magic.  The mere idea that we can use a tool as an extension of our mind, whoa…thrills me.  We know about wands welding magic to do our bidding. How about a magical pen and paper?

What I’m talking about is a power symbol you create with a pen and a piece of paper called a sigil.

“Sigils are monograms of thought, for the government of energy…a mathematical means of symbolizing desire and giving it form that has the virtue of preventing any thought and association on that particular desire (at the magical time), escaping the detection of the Ego, so that it does not restrain or attach such desire to its own transitory images, memories and worries, but allows it free passage to the sub-consciousness.  A.O. Spare, “The Book of Pleasure”

The modern version of the sigil is comprised of a statement of what you want, which is then broken down into an abstract design and finally charged by your energy.  The idea behind the sigil is that the conscious mind is limited in its ability to do magic and therefore you must enlist the help of the subconscious mind.  It’s a way to trick your conscious mind to look the other way, while your higher mind does the hocus pocus.  It’s simple, but they (those in the know) say it works.

Here’s the quick and dirty how to make a sigil:
1.  Get pen and paper.
2.  Write out your wish being brief, to the point and always in the positive.
3.  Turn the statement into a picture or a graphic image.
4.  Charge the picture with energy.
5.  Ground yourself and then forget about the sigil.  That’s an important point to remember. And you must believe and let it go.
Okay, let’s try it out.
1.   This is my wish to see a white rabbit.
Please note, I live in the mountains so my chances of seeing a beige colored rabbit is high.  Seeing a white rabbit in the mountains is near to impossible, unless my name is Alice.
2. Next, I scan the letters and cross out any repeating ones, as follows:
This xx my wxxx xo xex a xxxxx rxxbxxx.
Which leaves me with the following letters:
Thismywoearb
I have now simplified my intent, the first step in tricking my mind.  After all, it’s nothing but a row of letters, right?
3. Okay now for the fun part.  Take your pen and paper and make a rough sketch linking the various letters together.  There are no rules here.  You can line them up in any manner you wish and then
simplify it.

You want to simplify the shape so you can easily remember it.
4. Now, it’s time to charge the sigil with energy.  How you might ask?  It’s a matter of putting yourself into a trance-like state where the world disappears.  Imagine yourself dancing like the Whirling Dervilishes that is the state you’re going for. Get yourself pumped up and then visualize the sigil in your mind’s eye.  See it big, neon-like, then let it go to nothingness and stop your dancing.

5. Time to ground yourself.  First destroy the sigil, and then do something completely different.  Immerse yourself in nature to bring yourself back to reality.  Or go wash the dishes, do the laundry, walk the dog, any mundane job that is grounding.
6. Last thing to do.  Forget about the magic ritual you just performed and release it out to the universe.
That’s all there is to it.

What do you think?  Will you give it a go?
Till next time,
Elizabeth

Fun post. And no, I don't have the time. Although grounding myself is a good idea in general. :)

I've actually come across this technique in some of my chaos magic research. Very cool break down of the process, Elizabeth. Let us know if you see that rabbit ;)

Marsha,

Thanks! There are a lot of links for A.O. Spare, the occultist. His book, 'Book of Pleasures' some say links to Taoism/Daoism.

Erin,

Boy, do I hear you about not having enough time. Thus, I really thank you for taking to time to post. :)

LOL. If and when I see the White rabbit, I think I should wish for more time.

Ella,

No sign of furry creature yet! hehehe!

Hey, I'd like to hear more of your chaos research. How about a post on that?

I ordered Practical Sigil Magic and will check out Book of Pleasures. Not only does this spark my interest, but it looks like good writing research! Thanks, Elizabeth.

Marsha,

You have made my day!

It was not what I had expected, but while I was on FB today I saw it. The white rabbit. Yes, I thought I would see a live rabbit, but I didn't specify that. Scrolling down the home page, I saw the book cover for "The Feral Rabbit." The cover had a white rabbit! I didn't expect it, but there it was. Needless to say, I was jumping up and down. hmmmm. Possibilities abound.

There is a similar process in an old book: Richard Bach's Illusions. Our Huna group used blue feathers. Other than getting what you wish for, the exercise is useful for recognizing how often you get what you ask for, how you ask (on a daily basis) and what form it usually takes. Recognition is the key. Great post!
