Dreams Are Made Of This

What are dreams made of? Longings of the heart and mind, a way to touch the scared or simply the remains of an undigested meal. Possibly none or all of these. The speculations of the purpose of why we dream is an ongoing debate. But, I hardly think our fascination with our dreams will ever be put aside. After all, when was the last time you woke up and said, “You’ll never believed what I dreamt last night?”

The narrator of the film for PBS, “What are Dreams” asks, “They can be bewildering, terrifying, inspiring, but do they mean anything? Are dreams the nonsensical byproduct of a sleeping brain or a window into our unconscious mind, rich with revelations?”

In the PBS documentary, Deirdre Barrett said, (Harvard Medical School): “Dreams have been responsible for two Nobel prizes, the invention of a couple of major drugs, and innumerable novels, films and works of visual art.”

So, that’s a clear vote for the benefit of dreams. I’ve read and heard from other writers that solutions to story problems are sometimes solved in their dreams. Just the word itself, conjures up visions of possibilities, don’t you think?

Here’s the link for the transcript of the PBS film, “What are Dreams.”

Of course there is the other side of dreams. Nightmares. Have any lately?

DreamGiver

I had to share this awesome short animation film. It's called "DreamGiver."  It’s by a student at BYU, but don’t let the word student stop you from watching this film. The production level is high and the storytelling is enchanting.   Tyler Carter does an amazing job of creating a 2D animation of the real world and a 3D animation of the dream world.   Watch it and be thrilled by the beauty of the film.

Here is his blurb: A regular night of dream delivering turns into a literal nightmare when a boy's book of ancient mythology comes alive.”

What did you think?

An Invitation to Dream

On Sunday, I will be entering a world of dreams. A world that unfolds under a big tent where inside I will be transported to a place of beauty, imagination and harmony.  In this special place,  horse and man will share a world in total trust and freedom.  A place like no other. A place where dreams come alive.

I’m going to see the Cavalia show “Odysseo” in Atlanta, Georgia.  I have seen two other productions over the years and each one has lifted me into the fantasy realm.  Their shows are like the Cirque du Soleil with horses.  Here is Cavalia’s official blurb:

“Odysseo is a journey into the imagination, a voyage through space and time, and an exploration of nature’s greatest wonders – deserts, waterfalls, canyons, glaciers and more.
The spellbinding show is a renewed tribute to the relationship humans and horses have forged over thousands of years. With our faithful companions by our side, we have travelled to the four corners of the globe, built bridges between cultures and brought people from all over the planet closer together. Odysseo is a singular expression and celebration of this exceptionally moving journey.

I love to experience shows like this because it hits home why I love writing fantasy.

Till later,
Elizabeth
